On roads and cycle paths, cyclists are subject to the same regulations as all other road users.
Bicycles must be fitted with the following mandatory equipment:
Two brakes, front and rear.
Mandatory lighting :
- Reflectors (retro-reflective devices): red at the rear, white or yellow at the front, orange on the sides and on the pedals must be present on the bike and in good working order.
- Position lights: one emitting a yellow or white light at the front and a red light at the rear.
- A horn: The sound must be heard at least 50 metres away.
- Don't ride on sidewalks. Only children under the age of eight are allowed on sidewalks, as long as they keep to a reasonable speed and do not obstruct pedestrians.
- Bicycles can travel in both directions in 30 km/h zones, pedestrian areas and "zones de rencontre". Two-way traffic gives you better visibility, allows you to avoid major traffic arteries and simplifies your itinerary.
- If you are riding in a group, ride in pairs abreast or in single file.
- Outside built-up areas, it is compulsory to wear a retro-reflective yellow vest at night, or when visibility is poor.
- Helmets are compulsory for children under the age of 12, whether they are driving or riding a cycle. The helmet must be fastened.
- When cycling, it is forbidden to wear any sound-emitting device (headphones, earphones or headphones). Hand-held telephones are also prohibited.
Veloroute A veloroute is a route for medium- and long-distance cyclists, of departmental, regional, national or European interest, linking regions and crossing conurbations in good conditions. A cycle route uses all types of safe path, including greenways. It must meet criteria of linearity, continuity, safety, staking and signposting.
Voie verte A voie verte is a dedicated right-of-way for non-motorized traffic, reserved for pedestrians, cyclists, rollerbladers and people with reduced mobility. It is accessible to the greatest number of people, with no particular physical requirements, but it is safe and signposted.
Cycle touring loop A cycle touring loop is an itinerary for cyclists of variable length, linking its starting point, which may or may not be signposted, and which can be completed in one day.
