What is a "meublé classé de Tourisme"?
Meublés de tourisme are furnished villas, apartments or studios, for the exclusive use of the tenant, offered for rent to a visiting clientele who do not elect domicile there and who make a stay characterized by a daily, weekly or monthly rental (article L. 324-1-1 of the French Tourism Code).
They differ from other types of accommodation, such as hotels and tourist residences, in that they are reserved for the exclusive use of the tenant, with no reception area or lobby, and no shared services or facilities. They differ from chambres d'hôtes, where the occupant is present during the rental period, whereas in the case of meublés de tourisme, this is not necessarily the case.
In accordance with article D324-6 of the French Tourism Code, the owner of the furnished accommodation, or his representative, may indicate the classification of his furnished accommodation by displaying a sign according to the following scheme model drawn up by Atout France and approved by order of the Minister of Tourism. The classification decision must be prominently displayed inside the furnished accommodation.
So, although it's not an obligation, displaying a sign visible from the outside of the furnished accommodation contributes to the visibility of the quality of the accommodation.
