This first building, which also served as a meeting place for the Principality's general assemblies, underwent many changes over the centuries.
The various architectural changes illustrate the history of the Orange church.
After being ransacked by the Huguenots in 1561, it was restored in the early 17th century in accordance with a primitive plan similar to that of Saint Paul Trois Châteaux. At the end of the 18th century, the last bishop of Orange, Monseigneur du Tillet, undertook its restoration and enriched its furnishings.
Temple of the goddess Reason during the Revolution, it was returned to Catholic worship. In the 19th century, it was decorated with frescoes and stained-glass windows, while the east porch was rebuilt in neo-classical style.
