Caderousse

Since time immemorial, Caderousse has been flooded by the whims of the Rhône. This is evidenced by the unique dike that surrounds the village, the many signs of flooding, the farms in the countryside with their "recati", an upstairs refuge accessible by a sort of staircase, a rich agriculture thanks to the river's silts, and a once flourishing craft industry of brooms made from the millet straw that grew between two floods. How could anyone live in a country flooded twice a year?

Built on the banks of an ancient loop of the Rhône, 6 kilometers from Roman Orange, in the heart of the rich Comtadine plain, a stone's throw from the vineyards of Châteauneuf du Pape, the village of CADEROUSSE appears like an island.

Over the centuries, the town of Caderousse has been regularly flooded by the Rhone, causing extensive damage to surrounding homes and farmland. That's why, in the 19th century, the authorities decided to build a dike to protect the town from flooding.

Construction began in 1862 and was completed in 1872. The dike is approximately 1.8 km long and reaches a height of 10 meters. It was built in stone, with an 8-meter-wide base and a 2-meter-wide top.

The Caderousse dike was put to the test several times during the 20th century, notably during the major floods of 1955 and 2003. Thanks to its strength and height, it protected the town and its inhabitants from the catastrophic floods that affected other towns in the region.

Today, the Caderousse dike is still in service, and continues to play an important role in protecting the town against flooding from the Rhône. It has also become a local tourist attraction, attracting visitors who wish to learn more about the history of this important hydraulic infrastructure.

The dam

Following the major flood of May 1856, which inundated the entire village of Caderousse, Mayor Léon Roche received subsidies from Napoleon III to replace the old rampart with a masonry dike. 1736 m long, three meters high and 10 m wide, the two access gates can be closed by batardeaux or "bastardeu" in Provencal. Listed as a Monument Historique in November 2001, the enclosure still protects the village of Caderousse.
